Surgeon General, EPA agree: You should test for radon

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. It forms from the natural decay of radioactive elements in soil and rock, and it gets into the air you breathe. Radon has no odor or color — you can’t see it or smell it. Radon can enter your home or office in many ways:

  • Cracks in the foundation, floors or walls
  • Openings around sump pumps and drains
  • Gaps in suspended floors
  • Gaps around pipes
  • Cavities inside walls
  • Even through granite countertops (in tiny amounts)

Make no mistake: Radon can be dangerous. Homes, offices and schools are all vulnerable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says exposure to radon is responsible for an estimated 21,000 cancer deaths each year (see chart below). In fact, the Surgeon General says radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Environmental testing is the only way to determine the radon levels in your home. Both the U.S. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes for radon. The EPA also recommends testing for schools.
